Qualifications

IPQs.

Fish and Shellfish Industry Skills Qualifications at Level 2 and Level 3 have been approved, as have the fish and shellfish pathways within the intermediate and advanced apprenticeship frameworks.

Currently though there are no approved centres or apprenticeship providers supporting fish and shellfish industry skills in Northern Ireland. Seafish and the Seafood Training Academy are working to rectify this.

Apprenticeships

There are 9 different food manufacturing apprenticeship pathways available in Northern Ireland (and elsewhere in the UK). Northern Ireland is first in the UK to approve fish and shellfish pathways at both Intermediate (Level 2) and Advanced (Level 3).

This apprenticeships are equivalent to a fish and shellfish Level 2 or level 3 IPQ certificate, with additional essential generic skills to make up the full award.

The fish and shellfish level 2 framework encompasses processing, manufacturing and retail, with fish and chips well supported in the Level 3 framework.

At level 2 the picture is less clear for fish friers as Food Industry Skills is a useful alternative, particularly for customer service job roles in takeaways and tabled establishments.
